including briar pipes, meerschaum and corn cob varieties.
Smoking tobacco out of a pipe is a time-honored ritual of relaxation
enjoyed by many, many smokers across the world. Evidence of tobacco
use traces back to the 9th century A.D. as used to describe various
medicinal herbs. Pipe smoking has been used in various cultures for
social, medicinal, and religious ceremonies.
Indigenous peoples of Asia and Africa have been using water pipes to
smoke tobacco and other substances for at least 4,000 years. However,
using a water pipe to smoke tobacco should not be considered a “safe”
alternative to smoking cigarettes.
Today, pipe smoking in the Western world and water pipe smoking are
used for relaxation and in social settings. A beginning pipe smoker
just needs a pipe, some tobacco, a pipe tool and wood matches or a butane
lighter.
Other accessories include pipe cleaners and fitters, pipe tools, ashtrays,
pouches, tobacco jars, bags and pouches, and more. Samplers of different
tobacco blends are popular.
Choosing tobacco is a very personal process – some advise beginning
with a sampler of mild aromatics. Others say begin with whatever you
like – there’s no benefit to beginning with one certain
type over another. The whole experience of smoking a pipe is supposed
to be relaxing and enjoyable – pipes are either a good smoke or
not – as opposed to expensive or cheap.
Smoking begins with packing a bowl of tobacco. The first task is to
clean out the pipe from previous smokes – there will be previous
ashes and condensation left so run a pipe cleaner through the stem and
blow (away from your face) through the bowl.
Prepare the tobacco by removing the amount needed onto a piece of paper
or napkin – make sure it’s clump-free and not too wet –
also, never pinch the tobacco you’re loading. Now, fill the bowl
loosely. Don’t tamp with your fingers – use a tamping tool
to press down the tobacco until it is springy. The bowl should be about
¾ of the way full. Don’t pack the bowl so tightly at the
bottom or you won’t be able to draw any air at all through the
pipe. You will have to dump the bowl and repack it.
There is definitely a technique for lighting a tobacco pipe. The first
step is called the false light – apply a lit match to the bowl
in a circular motion. Use light puffs to unravel and swell the tobacco
in the bowl.
The next step is called the true light – lightly tamp once more
before applying another lit match in a circular motion while making
small puffs. This time the tobacco shouldn’t react the way it
did during the false light. It should light deep inside and stay lit
for several puffs.
